All About Camshafts for BMW Motorcycles

Camshafts are critical to the engines in BMW motorcycles running right. As the name suggests, they consist of two distinct parts: a cam and a shaft. Together, the activate the cylinders' intake and exhaust valves.

What Does a Camshaft Do for a BMW Bike?

In a typical four-cycle engine, for example, the cam is connected to the crankshaft by a timing belt or chain that keeps the cam's position fixed in relation to the engine cycle. The cam's lobes push the valves open, while valve springs push them closed. Since the motion can be too powerful for the valve stem to bear, either a tappet or rocker arm is used to transfer it.

How Can I Tell the Camshafts or Lifters on My Motorcycle are Bad?

Camshafts, though made rugged, from cast iron or cast steel blanks, usually (or milled from a solid block of steel, in the case of custom and performance parts), can still crack or wear out eventually. That happens, and they can fail. Signs of trouble include:

  • Misfires, clattering or tapping noises from the valve covers, and increased emissions, indicating worn camshaft lobes
  • A seizing engine, suggesting a broken cam

See any, and you should run an inspection and do engine repairs ASAP. We've got the replacement cam, lifters and parts you need -- genuine BMW Motorrad, so top-quality, made to fit, and backed by warranty. Plus, our discounts are steep.
